A PLACE, BEFORE A COLLECTION

An island shaped by the sea and a living tradition.

Mount Putuo is an island in Zhejiang’s Zhoushan archipelago, in the East China Sea. One of China’s Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains, it is a place of devotion to Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion.

Pilgrims have travelled here for over a thousand years. “Buddhist world amid sea and sky” describes the closeness of its coastal landscape and religious life. For pilgrims, the journey can also hold wishes for loved ones’ well-being and a search for inner steadiness.

FROM CULTURE TO DAILY LIFE

Compassion can begin with paying attention.

Guanyin’s name evokes hearing the suffering of the world; compassion is central to this Buddhist tradition. Our contemporary response is to make time, listen properly, and bring care to familiar routines.

Make room for a pause.

Make tea without rushing. Notice its warmth and the person sitting opposite.

Listen a little longer.

Put the phone down. Give someone at your table your attention.

Give with a particular person in mind.

Choose something for the recipient, then tell them why.

Contemporary suggestions, not prescribed religious practices.

READING THE OBJECTS

Wishes for clarity, good fortune and togetherness.

Buddhist imagery and Chinese folk symbols share this collection. Both can express wishes, but they come from different traditions.

Sutra lettering recalls Buddhist wisdom; the lotus evokes purity and awakening. Today, these motifs can remind us to slow down and look attentively.

The gourd · a wish for fu lu

Hulu, “gourd,” echoes fulu—good fortune and prosperity. This familiar wordplay gives a wish a visible form, for a new home or chapter.
